This is another post regarding the fall festival that took place October 4, 2008
One of the biggest complaints I had about the fall festival around me was the waste of gas. And no, I don’t mean because there were more cars, trucks and SUV’s than you could shake a stick at in the parade either. What I’m talking about is a local construction company that for some reason decided to put his entire fleet of Semis, Back hoes (large construction digging vehicles), etc in the parade. We’re talking large black smoke puffing loud vehicles. They weren’t throwing candy, weren’t handing out anything (or if they were, they ran out long before where I was at) — they were there for the purpose of advertising their company.
Now don’t get me wrong, that in itself isn’t a bad thing — but they didn’t need their fleet of vehicles in the parade wasting gas to do it. They could’ve walked, or had, I don’t know, a float in the parade made by them? Think of it, it’s a construction company that builds houses and lays concrete! I doubt making a float would be difficult — they could’ve even used spare parts from their projects to save money.
But it wasn’t just me thinking this. I heard a number of people commenting about the wasting of gas, and how they were practically bragging about their money when most of the people they were parading in front of have been conserving gas just to survive. I was actually surprised that I heard people commenting about it — even more so that I saw some people shaking their heads in obvious disbelief that they even thought of doing it.

Apparently the idea of “change” was running throughout all the parties. It’s turning out to be the biggest fad of all time. A candidate, that’s been in office for years and is running for re-election has a sign that said “vote for change! vote for X” (can’t remember who the X was). Here’s the kicker — it was a republican!
Tell me, please, anyone…. how can you vote for a “change” by re-electing someone back into office? Wouldn’t that be, by default, voting to keep things the same as they’ve been in the past?
Better yet… what’s worse, that the candidate thinks people are too dumb to realize it, or that there’s a number of people will vote for him because of it?
Every year my town used to have a free chili dinner on the Friday before the fall festival. It was paid for by the group putting on the festival (normally getting a few grand in donations to hold it).
This year they held it as before, yet unlike the prior years people were complaining. I know some are thinking “can’t complain if it’s free” which iskind of true. But the main thing was the complaint was there wasn’t that much meat in it. Now I being a vegetaian would prefer if meat wasn’t used in anything (or at least a completely 100% vegan [and kosher] meal was available), however I can see their point offhand.
I make vegetarian chili all the time, and I can make enough for about 10 people for under $20. I could swing around 250lb of chili for about $200 (buying in bulk of course) that’s vegetarian. Given their budget… I’d have over a ton of food for the same amount. Yet it’s also said they only have a few hundred people showing up for it as well. Which makes someone wonder — are they no longer getting funds from the tourism and local businesses; have the prices gone up so much they can’t afford as much; is someone being cheap; is someone stealing the money?
It’s a sad thing that even a few thousand dollars isn’t enogh money to create a simple and cheap meal such as chili. Now I understand that chances are people are just complaining becase they’re used to heavy meat-based meals, and don’t really understand what a “serving size” is, but it still makes you think a little.
Coming this weekend will be my county’s fall festival. While I will be showing up just to see what all is there (despite being there with a booth the past few years), I doubt there’ll be too much of political/environmental things going on.
